Bunker Renovatoin – Phase 3 Update

14th fairway tree felling

The last week and a half has seen the winter weather take hold with 2 inches of snow falling across the golf course and temps hitting -7 degrees!. With many greens still covered in snow and ice it is worth noting parts of the course see little if any sun at this time of year due to being surrounded by trees, most notably: 2nd, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th,11th,14th, 15th and 16th greens. With night time temps dropping to -3 and daytime temps not rising above freezing there is little chance of a thaw. Despite a slight improvement in the forecast it is likely the  course will remain closed over the coming weekend (11th,12th December).

On a positive note all ground works have been completed in the final phase of bunker work with the contractors having left site. Course architect Howard Swan has made his final visit and signed off the last of the work.
Else where on the course the main tasks have been shutting down the irrigation system, trimming/tidying trees to the right of the 17th green, cutting back the undergrowth between the 17th and 18th fairways as well as removing the silver birch on the corner of the 14th fairway.

Restored view of the 14th green

Following advice and recommendations from the course architect and professional tree surgeon the tree has been removed in order to restore the hole back to its original design, contributing to the broader landscape restoration of the golf course as a whole. The front of the approach and green complex can now be seen from the fairway rewarding a well struck drive with a line into the green. Steve Coates has joined the greenkeeping team bringing with him 14 years of experience having previously worked in Germany and The Wisley Golf Club. This brings the total number of staff to six. As we head towards Christmas fingers remain crossed the weather improves and the course returns to normality!

  1. Morning just looked at Blog site for the first time Very professional and looks great love the black surround with white txt and great photos.
I think this information should be posted on web site without members having to look for a Link. The work done on your blog puts our web site to shame very smart indeed. However should this work be carried out by office and free you guys up to look after the course.
